Shonte
joined YO! at McKim Center as a high school dropout with
a young son to provide for. Her goal was to earn a GED and
work in the nursing field. Shonte has managed to achieve
her goals in spite of incredible odds, including debilitating
family illness and living in one of Baltimore’s high-crime
communities where instances of “drive-bys” and
shoot-outs are commonplace. Shonte has earned a GED, completed
driver’s education and training to become a certified
nurse practitioner. She is now successfully employed at
The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Shonte is giving back by serving
as a FUTURES One-2-One peer mentor to a younger YO! member.

In
June 2002, Derrick enrolled in YO! at The
Chance to get assistance in earning a GED and to obtain
employment. As an ex-offender, Derrick had many obstacles
to overcome. He enrolled in job readiness classes, gained
work experience through an office internship, and earned
the GED in June of 2004. With constant encouragement and
perseverance, Derrick found employment at the Solo Cup Company.
He also enrolled in driver’s education classes, obtained
a driver’s license and purchased his first car. Derrick
is an aspiring artist and is currently working on the release
of a CD. He continues to contribute to activities at YO!
at The Chance.
